Allison Miner Series: Cultural Heritage Through Festivals and Music of Colombia & Louisiana 2 of 2
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Archive presents the second Allison Miner Series: Cultural Heritage Through Festivals and Music of Colombia and Louisiana on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center.
Two presentations celebrating the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and our Expedia Cultural Exchange country Colombia! Free and open to the public. Doors open at 6pm with back-to-back engaging presentations about festivals, heritage, and the brass bands that unites us.
About the Allison Miner Series:
The Allison Miner Series is an initiative of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive to celebrate Jazz Fest and Archive founder Allison Miner, and highlight research, scholarship, and projects that utilize the historic collections in the Jazz & Heritage Archive.
The Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge of Colombia through the Arts Directorate sponsor the Colombian Chirimia and New Orleans Brass band music: a common language project at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation
Chirimia and New Orleans Brass Band Music: Panelists, Leonidas Valencia and Alejandro Montaña Ibáñez. Moderated by Ana María Ochoa, Tulane University.
Both the Chirimía Chocoana and New Orleans Brass Bands are deeply rooted cultural manifestations that reflect and celebrate the history and diversity of their communities through music. These musical forms not only provide entertainment, but also foster community cohesion, the transmission of history, and the affirmation of cultural identities. As living expressions of resilience and joy, they continue to adapt and resonate with today's generations, keeping alive the flame of their rich cultural heritages.
Colombian Chirimía reflects the assimilation and reaffirmation of African culture in Colombia, integrating musical elements that demonstrate the resistance and cultural identity of the Afro-descendant communities settled in the northern Pacific of Colombia. Through its musical structure, Chirimía becomes a cultural expression that encompasses social, religious, farming, and festive practices, keeping the African heritage alive in the Colombian context.
The New Orleans Brass Band is a deep-rooted cultural tradition that fuses African and European influences, originating in African cultures brought by slaves and mixing with European religious processions. These celebrations evolved over time, incorporating brass music, dancing, and community participation. They represent a joyful expression of African American identity by celebrating life and community.

OH MY GOD THIS IS CLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAN!!!!!!!!
Saw Susan Cowsill at Chickie Wah Wah in New Orleans years ago and she did a full show of Karen Carpenter covers. She and her band absolutely nailed it.
We all miss JC. Gone too soon. Good to see that SJ of his in this video. We made sure it was ready for this show. Time flys.
Wonderful! Beautiful singing as always. Great band. Love the keys!
I didn't know that Robert De Niro played
Ya he's always Happening mr. Muscal 😅😅😅
Thanks for sharing this! Unfortunately it looks like there’s something wrong with the way it processed and might need to be reuploaded. It skips and plays at the wrong speed throughout. Would love to see a fixed version!
Это великолепно, потрясающе! Добрая память John!
Ce groupe de jazz me donne toujours la chair de poule...même en fauteuil roulant, les gens se lèvent pour Tuba Skinny This jazz group always gives me goosebumps...even in a wheelchair, people stand up for Tuba Skinny

Would love to see her more on TV. Would love to listen to her on Sirius xm. Susan has some serious talent. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy her musical performances.
CHARLIE ONE OF THE GREATEST HARP PLAYER OF ALL TIME. BEAUTIFUL TIMING
sorry but way past your prime...she gas got worse in the years...maybe from her dad and brothers..
You’re nuts.
ME ENCANTA ESTA MÚSICA ❤❤😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇦🇷
something wrong with the recording.
Great snare drum and drumming here.
I am 69 and have always loved Susan. It is born from admiration. No guilt. All is good. And I love the Cowsills too.
Fantastic show!! Wasn't sure I had time to watch it all, but it didn't take long for me to decide I'd make the time!
Great job Susan
Be honest. If her last name wasn't Cowsill would you pay to see that act?
I definitely would. Her solo stuff is great.
How dy
I loved it😃
Her foot work is outer worldly. #happyFEET. I can watch her dance every day. I'm happy for her
Bluegrass is my favorite music but when i listen to Cajun, like bluegrass, i can't keep my hands and feet still. I enjoyed your music immensely. Thank you, kt
Wonderfulllllllllll
Terrific voice. Excellent solo singer.
Great night 🫶🏾
a songbook stand !?!?!?>...please
does she have a moustache?
What an inspiration she is, such a great concert, fresh upbeat awesome! Thank you Susan!
Ain't lie in
She sounds so great. She didn't sing "To sir with love" Maybe she will add it to her concerts in the future. You must watch her: ua-cam.com/video/jf_TrFPgdh0/v-deo.html
🙂🙂🙂
Great performance !
After listening to the song dedicated to her late father in law, I’m glad she was close with him. Knowing her own father was mean and abusive, she found love in her relationship with her in-laws referring to them as mom and dad.
Excellent, she always had star quality.
You sound good memories are good❤
Your voice sounds great susan 😊
Memories 😊
I have all of the Cowsills albums and Susans as well, a super talent
